Alisha James has an extensive background in law enforcement. She began her career in 2005 with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), where she served as a patrol officer before being selected to work as an undercover detective. She continued to advance and was tasked with developing innovative methods to recruit women minorities to the force. This work earned her further recognition, and in 2010 she was selected to join the elite trainee operations at the MNPD’s training academy.

In 2011, she joined the United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office. There, she conducted investigations and prepared reports including sentencing recommendations for individuals convicted of federal offenses and served as a firearms and non-lethal ammunitions instructor.

Ms. James joined the Tennessee Department of Corrections in 2014 and served as a Probation Administrator. In this role, she oversaw more than 500 staff members who were responsible for the supervision of over 45,000 offenders in the community. She also played a key role in driving regional initiatives and is a subject matter expert on firearms and defensive tactics. In 2016 she was appointed to the role of Assistant Commissioner of Community Supervision.
